I would assume that as fit up means the best way you could fit up the piece. As detailed would be exactly as the blue prints specify. Is this something out of a text book? I have never seen those type of specifications on blue prints.....

Hello All.

The As-Detailed and As-Fitup terms are used in AWS D1.1 for prequalified Joint Details.

Here is how the code addresses it. This is from AWS D1.1 2004

3.12.3 Joint Dimensions
(1) Dimensions of groove welds specified in 3.12
may vary on design or detail drawings within the limits
of tolerances shown in the “As Detailed” column in Figure
3.3.
(2) Fit-up tolerances of Figure 3.3 may be applied to
the dimensions shown on the detail drawing. However,
the use of fit-up tolerances does not exempt the user
from meeting the minimum weld size requirements of
3.12.2.1.
(3) J- and U-grooves may be prepared before or after
assembly.

Wow, That was a great answer! It's good to see some posts that are written with facts....... I have to ask; are you a CWI, engineer, or are you just that good at what you do?

Either way I got to thank you for a great answer!
